Universally Documentation

Step-by-step guides, multilingual SEO tips, and best practices to help you translate and scale your WordPress website.

Supported languages

Universally supports 110 languages for website translation, covering over 95% of the world’s online population. Each language is identified by an ISO 639 code and may have one or more translation variants to account for regional differences in vocabulary, spelling, and grammar.

How Languages Work

When you add a language to your site, Universally uses the language code to identify it and the variant to determine which translation style to apply. Most languages have a single variant that matches their code. Languages with significant regional differences, like Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, English, and French, offer multiple variants so your translations feel natural to each audience.

For example, Spanish (es) has two variants: es for European Spanish and es-419 for Latin American Spanish. A visitor from Mexico will see different phrasing than a visitor from Spain, even though both are reading Spanish.
